The lotus sutra-Open for display at Delhi

A rare moment for buddhism here in Delhi as Lotus sutra opens today to public. As informed by Times of India ,Gilgit Lotus sutra manuscript discovered by cattle grazers in Gilgit in a Buddhist stupa in 1931.This rare manuscript housed with the National Archives of India, dates back to 5-6th century AD.They are perhaps the only body of Buddhist manuscripts discovered in India.
The first set of Gilgit Lotus Sutra manuscripts was found in a wooden box inside a circular chamber of a Buddhist stupa in 1931 in POK.National Archives say that manuscript survived the test of time because of sub zero temperature of region and the fact that it was written on a Bhoj(birch) tree that is resistant to decay.
The Lotus sutra is one of the most revered scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism and represents the discourses delivered by Buddha towards the last days of his life. The sutra originally written in Buddhist form of sanskrit ,in English this sutra means'Sutra of white lotus of sublime Dhamma'.It is popularly known as the Lotus sutra.
The Lotus sutra states that Buddhahood is a condition of immense happiness, freedom from fear and from all illusion-is inherent in all life forms. The development of this ability enables all to overcome the problems of life and live a fulfilled active life, fully engaged with others and society. The Lotus sutra asserts the ultimate reality of Buddha nature inherent in life forms. It is a teaching which profoundly affirms the realities of life and encourages one to develop communication channels with others and society at large. It make attainment of enlighenment a possibility open to all people regardless of their race, gender, education or societal status.

dusshera,delhi

Today was Dusshera festival in India and travelling across the Delhi is a special experience at this time around. The festival is celebrated because the Lord Rama in Hindu mythology defeated and killed the Demon King Ravana. The festival is celebrated across the subcontinent for the victory of truth over evil forces. The Prince of Ayodhaya Rama ended the evil rule of Ravana, King of Lanka and freed his wife Sita from evil claws of Demon ruler.
The festival starts with staging of Ramayana  the epic for two weeks and on the day of Dusshera ,the effigy of Ravana, Kumbhakarna(his brother)and Meghanadha(his son) are burned down depicting the end of evil.
At my place in south Delhi the festivity started with huge display of crackers and fireworks. The intensity of firework increased with the swelling number of crowd. The children present could be seen having a nice time. Parents would pick up little kids on their shoulders, to let them see clearly over the crowd. Kids having bought the swords as well as bow and arrow were seen flaunting their skill. The firework grew more and more intense and the evening started to grow into night. The sky was ablaze with different kind of colors and patterns.
Suddenly the crowd started to gather closely towards Ravana’s effigy and I knew the show was on to its end. The Ravana was set on fire by a local leader. Ravana burned with intense fire inside it and along with it thousands of crackers placed in it’s body. The fire pulled down the laughing statue of Ravana and ended the era of Evil.
